How about adding a second rating to movies, this second rating should be the rating by users who have the same taste in movies like me. Could be the 5-10 % users who match me best. This would give a very high indication on whether or not I'm going to like a movie.

Hi thelostboyofcyberspace,

This is an interesting suggestion. There are a few problems that would have to be addressed.
1. IMDb would have to limit this to people who have rated a minimum number of titles, so that the correlation statistic is meaningful for a match.
2. Likewise, IMDb should consider another user as a potential match only if you and that other user have both jointly rated a minimum number of titles.
3. The "Compared to You" feature shows the Pearson Correlation with another user. The correlation with other users tend to be relatively low. I've looked at over a hundred other users with similar interests in films. The highest correlation I've seen is 65%. This would mean that the threshold of who matches you would have to be set very low.
4. The set of people who matches a specific person has to be computed for each person. This is computationally expensive. At best that set could only be computed on a weekly or monthly basis to avoid degrading the rest of IMDb services.

Note: I am a long time user of IMDb with a background in quantitative statistics. I am not a staff member.

Hi Dan, thanks for taking the time posting these very relevant points on which I all agree, I've been using imdb.com for ages, but only created a little about a year ago. I'm a brand new user in this forum and only created my profile in order to post my idea.
Do you have any suggestions on how to get the ball rolling, how can I get more likes, so that imdb might hopefully take it into consideration?

Hi thelostboyofcyberspace,

Currently there are 1207 ideas that users have suggested. Some of these idea overlap.
https://getsatisfaction.com/imdb?topic-list[settings][type]=idea

This can be further broken down by:

No Status (836)
https://getsatisfaction.com/imdb?topic-list[settings][status]=none&topic-list[settings][type]=id...

Under Consideration (13)
https://getsatisfaction.com/imdb?topic-list[settings][status]=pending&topic-list[settings][type]...

Planned (8)

Implemented (286)

Not Planned (64)

You may notice that the IMDb staff has evaluated only 371 (or 44%) of the ideas. So it may take some time for someone to review your idea.

When IMDb reviews ideas for implementation they consider the amount of effort it would take to implement the idea, the amount of processing time the idea would take, how the idea complements other IMDb features and the popularity of the idea.

I recommend that you thoughtfully promote your idea via the social media buttons at the top of this page. Politely ask friends, family, associates and other people to click the like button a the top of this page. I've already clicked the like button.

I recommend that you review other ideas to get a better understanding of the kind of ideas that IMDb have implemented and have under consideration. I urge you to like other ideas that you would find useful.

I've already expressed my concerns regarding you idea in my original response. If I think of ways to mitigate those concerns, I will post them in this thread.
