Advanced Search Results vs actual credits

An Advanced Search in Soundtracks for “Zarathustra”, as in ‘Also Sprach Zarathustra’ by Richard Strauss, returned 213 records. Of these, two were misattributed to Johann Strauss.

When comparing this list to the credits on Richard Strauss’s page, there is a significant discrepancy.

On Strauss’s page, there are another 47 entries for “Also Sprach Zarathustra”. There is a further 8 that do not show in the search due to spelling/ typographical errors and language variations i.e.

  • Zaratustra
  • Zarathsura
  • Zarathrustra
  • Zarathastra
  • Zarathusta
  • Zarathurstra

As someone who uses the Advanced Search function regularly, it is disconcerting to find such a large difference between the search results and what is credited to Richard Strauss.

Is there a reason for this? Is it a limitation of the Advanced Search function?

Further to the Advanced Search issue above, an Advanced Search for “Walküre”, as in ‘Die Walküre’by Richard Wagner, returns 111 results.

Amongst these results are some duplicates

  • Nos 35 and 69 are the same.
  • The same six titles occupy positions 45 to 5 and 51 to 56.

  1. It is impossible to compare the 111 results obtained from the Advanced Search with what is displayed on Wagner’s credits. Only the song titles are displayed on the credits, whereas the search returned references to the opera of the same name which can be found in the text of the soundtrack item e.g. from ‘Die Walküre’.

However, there are three titles that do not show in the search results but that are in Wagner’s credits.

Hi Graham,

Title Text search for Soundtracks (using Soundtracks on the Advanced Title Search) is designed to look for titles with text matches within soundtrack details for title pages. It is not intended to look for credit information for specific people. That can be done simply in the name page's "Filmography" section without searching.

For your specific example provided first, the search https://www.imdb.com/search/title-text/?soundtracks=Zarathustra returns 213 titles.

The "Soundtrack" section of the filmography for Richard Strauss lists 205 titles with "Zarathustra" mentioned in the credit. All of these titles are returned in the search above.

There are a couple of titles in the name page with soundtrack details with spellings variations of Zarathustra; these are not returned as part of the search results since we look for an exact match for words for increased precision in title text searches.

The remaining titles on the Richard Strauss' filmography do not mention "Zarathustra" in the soundtrack credit's details, and are therefore not included in the search results.

Please let us know if we can offer any further help.
