Before I give you my awesome picks, I'll need an answer to a question: what if a poster is from a different decade than the film?
For example, Star Wars: The Phantom Menace (1999) was re-released in 2012. This poster was one of several official ones used for the re-release.
So, if I was to, for example, suggest that poster, would you categorize it in the 1990s poll or 2010s poll?

That's a great question. There are a fair amount of posters in many IMDb image pages where they were published or created after the theatrical run of the given movie in question. And these usually aren't listed as such on IMDb. The Star Wars franchise is a great example. (I wonder if even some fan art makes it onto their image pages as well .. just a point of curiosity not contention).

I think that as the poll is about the movie poster and not the movie itself, we should put your 2012 poster of The Phantom Menace in the 2010s, but I will mention that the poster was created for a re-release in 2012 to avoid confusion.

It's your question but keep in mind that many of these posters DO NOT list their publication date or the date of any respective rerelease which they have been directly or indirectly commissioned for. mihailo.razvigor already had knowledge that the particular Phantom Menace poster was from 2012.

To add to Stepan's point, I still think it would be too difficult to determine when the poster was made,
For example, before you (Cinephile) clarified the requirements for inclusion, my 1930s pick was this poster for Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde (1931).
However, it looked pretty modern to me, so I searched online, and found out that the poster was made for Turner Classic Movies Festival in 2009. So, fine, I can suggest that poster for my '00s pick, but how many people here will have patience and time do what I did, and search for a source year of a poster? Or will you check every poster that we suggest? Unlikely.

This follows another problem... a lot of older films had many re-releases, during the years.
It is very difficult to track down from which era does a poster belong to. A case in point - the film Dracula (1931).
Here are some of the posters for that film: the top row are the original 1931 posters, while the bottom row has re-release posters up to the 1960s.

How can an average man know whether the one from 1947 is not the original poster?
It certainly looks 1930s to me.

So, yeah, I know I'm creating confusion with these posts, but I really like this poll idea, and would also like it if it has clear set of rules.

For example, I can't put a 1947 poster of Dracula in the 1930s, because I can't credit the artist of the 1931 posters for the 1947 poster.

If you have doubt about a poster, you can search for it on Google Images

It easy to see in which decade they come from:

1938 is a different version of the 1931 one
1947 have too many details
1951 is a different version of the second 1931 poster
1962 is too stylized to be 1931

Anyway, when the list will be big enough I will research every poster sumidtted to make sure that they aren't fan-made or in the wrong decade.

I don't have a problem with your criteria - I was only wondering how will you know whether the posters are within the accurate timeframe or not. But you have answered with this:
Anyway, when the list will be big enough I will research every poster sumidtted to make sure that they aren't fan-made or in the wrong decade.
...and now I know.
Thank you.

By the way, maybe you could ask admins to update your first post with information about this criteria ("decade of the poster, not the decade of the movie"), so that the people who are suggesting would know that, which would make it easier for you too, when you start researching.

No, nevermind, I will put the posters in the decade that the movie was made, but if we find out that the poster was made for a re-release I will note it on the list.

Otherwise, as you said, it would be too complicated for users to make the difference.

BONAFIDE BOSS, perhaps due to abundance of links your post triggered the spam filter. Fished it out.

Cinephile, one of BB's picks is exactly what I was talking about in this same thread above.
The poster for 12 Angry Men he chose was made for the Criterion Collection Bluray edition... in 2011!
Of course, you cannot fault BB, because he couldn't possibly knew whether that was the original poster from 1957 or not. But that shows to me that it would be extremelly difficult to make this list following the rules that ''the year of a poster is important, and not the year of a film''.

As I said it might be complicated, I think that it wouldn't be respectful for the designers of the posters to put it in the wrong decade. It is like if you were crediting the 1950s artist for the 2000s poster.

The Good the Bad and the Ugly seem also like a recent poster.

My other opinion is that every decade has his style, if we are not putting the poster in the decade they were made, it wouldn't be coherent.

In your 1980s list, you misplaced my name with the film's title, lol.

Keep in mind that one the biggest flaws with poster polls is the creator often just throws in any random (non-stillframe) images including DVD/BluRay case or VHS box art. Which by any stretch of the definition for what makes a poster? Are not posters.

Anyway, this poll is unlikely to go live.
