I know you can't manually change the "known for" section for an actor, but all i'm saying if David Hasselhoff is "known for" Click and Dodgeball over Knightrider and Baywatch then the algoryth is plain wrong.

I feel they should keep the algoryth, in addition to having the ability to manually change it.

"known for" feature is meant to aid users in making sure they're find the right person they're looking for. So, it has to go, somewhat, by how users use the site and which titles they're clicking on most often.

Night Rider is ranked 2,700 and Click, 37% higher, at 1,700. So users will be more familiar with that title.

Keep in mind, probably a high percent of site users were born well after Night Rider was airing and won't know a great deal about it or that that guy is the same guy in Click.

If they allowed us to change it, you'd change it to Night Rider and I'd change it back...what'd be the point of having them all changed ever few minutes, since 200,000,000 visitors per month will likely have differing opinions. It's not supposed to match your opinion of what he's know for, but a tool so that when you type in a name, you're likely to recognize a title or two highlighted on the page and know whether it's the guy you're looking for or not.

Well, the "known for" does get incorrect at times. Drake Bell is not known for Drake & Josh apparently, even though that's his biggest role to date with 7+ Kids Choice Awards for just that role alone.

Please see what bluesmanSF wrote above. Kids Choice Awards are not considered in the Known For algorithm, nor should they be.

Please compare:

Most Popular Feature Films With Drake Bell

... with known for listed for Drake Bell.

yes, but the term "known for" feels incorrect. No one remembers him in Jerry Maguire or High Fidelity as they were small roles. When is someone known for as small a role as Bell played in those films?

Hi Joseph Prasad,

More correctly, the method IMDb uses to determine Known For is a heuristic, not an algorithm. I've included links to the formal definitions of these terms for reference.

Although a well defined heuristic will work in the majority of cases for which it is designed, there will be boundary conditions for which it will produce results that are non-optimal. Any Known For heuristic has to produce reasonable results while using a minimum amount of computing resources. The current Known For heuristic does a reasonable job for most people in IMDb's database. I suspect that IMDb would be interested in any heuristic that would work better without taking significantly more processing time and memory.

Regardless of how well any Known For heuristic works, it can only be based on the consensus of IMDb users and not on individuals perspectives on what a person is Known For.
