Following instruction manual carefully and, despite this, I can't get any noise to come out of the PC I've connected the Alesis Vortex to. Probably the most confusing instructions I've ever read!!

Hello Ross,

Thanks for the post. I'd like to help! You need to use a VST with your keyboard to output sound from your computer. There are no built in sounds inside your Vortex. The Vortex is a MIDI controller that controls the sounds from your VST. Make sure you're using a VST with your Vortex. Refer to your VST's instructions on how to install the software and use it with your hardware.

Thanks Chris - I'm not expecting any noise to come out of the Vortex (hence why I said "can't get any noise to come out of the PC" - would I be right in presuming that Ableton Live 8 is a VST? It was the disc that came with the MIDI controller - if that's what you're talking about, that's the issue I'm having. I've installed it, I've followed the instructions, no joy.

So how come the Vortex manual says nothing about a VST? And, with respect, you're chucking the term VST around presuming I know what you're on about. I don't - otherwise I wouldn't have come here asking for help! Just saying "go search for it" isn't that helpful, there could be a million different places all point out things that don't make sense. Please direct me to something that actually makes the point you're trying to lead me to

I'm sorry that you don't know what VST stands for. VST stands for Virtual Studio Technology (VST). It is a software interface that integrates software audio synthesizer and effect plugins with audio editors and recording systems. VST and similar technologies use digital signal processing to simulate traditional recording studio hardware in software.

The Vortex comes with a premium virtual synth from Sonivox, which includes great-sounding pads, basses, leads, and drums. You also get Ableton Live Lite Alesis Edition software for performing, recording, and sequencing music right out of the box. You would use a combination of both to utilize your Vortex. There should be included instructions inside your Vortex package on how to obtain the virtual synth. Please make sure you register your Vortex on alesis.com too.

Lastly, download the Vortex Ableton Live Controller Map - http://alesis.com/contentmgr/showdeta... to utilize your controller in Ableton Live.

The Vortex came with no such thing - it came with a disc for Ableton Live 8 and that was all. Nothing about Sonivox. I've already downloaded the Live Controller map, followed all of the instructions and nothing happens. The next section in the instruction manual says that the Vortex should say "PF" in the display but it doesn't. And the manual offers no suggestion as to how to make this happen.

1. where can I get this Sonivox thing?
2. how do I make it work with the Ableton AND the Vortex?

Please be very clear in your instructions and use plain English - I'm afraid I don't talk tech!!!
