How can I permanently disable the base on my Alesis SR18?
I have no knowledge of nor do I want to use Midi. I use the machine as a stage drummer for my Duo.

I believe you can only mute the bass!

Hold down the [Bass] button and then while holding press [Mute]

Or, as found online (not from me): « How to permanently turn off BASS on an Alesis SR18! This lets you globally set the volume level for bass and percussion.

From the default / opening screen:

-> Press BASS
-> Press DRUM SET
-> Page Up/Down to get VOLUME
-> Press DEC (or rotate dial) until volume is zero
-> Press + Hold SAVE/COPY
-> Press REC (ENTER) to get SET SAVED

Done! The "random bass line in a random key" gremlin is gone! Same procedure works for percussion, too. It is not in the manual, and Alesis support seems unaware of it.»

Thanks, I tried this but it seems to reinitialise itself when you turn it back on.

This did not work. Changed to another drum pattern and the volume comes back on. Didn't even have to turn it off and back on.

It comes right back on as soon as you restart the machine

There is a way to do it! Do not despair! I posted the instructions on this forum somewhere, I'll see if I can track them down. It is a little tricky.

Again how do we disable the bass permanently? It really is annoying. There are some features I like better than the SR 16 but this makes it more of a pain in the butt to use. Let me know if there's a way.

In order to mute the bass, you will first need to save the pattern to a user bank. To do this:
1. Make sure you're in PATTERN MODE by pressing PATTERN/SONG. The display will say PATTERN at the top.

2. Press and hold the SAVE/COPY button. You'll notice the REC LED blink.

3. Select the user bank where you want your pattern to save. You can change the value by rotating the value dial, using the INC/DEC arrow buttons, or simply typing in the number of the user bank using the number keys.

4. While still holding the SAVE/COPY button, press the REC/ENTER button to confirm.The display will read SAVE DONE. Release both buttons to exit.

After this, you'll need to erase the instrument events from the user pattern that we just saved. To do this:

1. Again, confirm you're in PATTERN MODE, and make sure the playback is stopped.

2. Press PRESET/USER to navigate to the user bank. Your display will say USER.

3. Press and hold ERASE. The display will read PATTERN ERASE?

4. While holding down ERASE, press and hold the layer you'd like to erase (BASS, in this particular case) The display will read BASS ERASE?

5. While holding down BASS and ERASE, press REC (ENTER) to confirm. The display will read BASS ERASED.

After performing these steps, you should notice the bass will not play back with the drum pattern.

Note: The above steps can be performed to mute the drum or percussion sounds as well. To do this, simply press and hold the DRUM or PERC button in step 4 above.

HI, I'm back. There IS a way to permanently, globally disable the "random bass line in a random key" feature. Both my keyboard player and I have done it on separate machines. We just can't remember how we did it. But it was NOT in the steps described above by Bill R. The bass stays off, on all drum kits.

I think this is it, with some edits from above.
From the default / opening screen:

-> Press BASS
-> Press DRUM SET (Display should say ChRattle / BAS000 and USER)
-> Page up once for Page 2, VOLUME
-> Rotate dial counter-clockwise until volume is down to 00
-> Press + Hold SAVE/COPY
-> Press REC (ENTER) to get SET SAVED

Works for me, but as always, YMMV. Good luck!

This only worked temporarily. As soon as I switched patterns, the bass volume was back up.

Would someone from Alesis please step in and answer this question definitively? Can we disable the bass at the system level and save it so that we don't have to bother with turning it off every time we change patterns or reboot the device? If so, how? If not, why not?

OK,this works for me, the bass stays off on all patterns, drum sets, reboots, etc. It has stayed off for years. But as always, YMMV. So, to turn off the bass:

Turn on the SR18. From the default / opening screen:

-> Press BASS
-> Press DRUM SET
-> Rotate the dial to the left to get ChRattle (or ChorHarm) / BAS000
-> Press + Hold SAVE/COPY to get SAVE SET / 00
-> Press REC (ENTER) to get SET SAVED
-> Turn off SR18, then back on again (this step may not be necessary).

Likewise, to turn off Percussion:

Turn on the SR18. From the default / opening screen:

-> Press PERC
-> Press DRUM SET
-> Rotate the dial to the left to get Ambient / DRM000
-> Press + Hold SAVE/COPY to get SAVE SET / 00
-> Press REC (ENTER) to get SET SAVED
-> Turn off SR18, then back on again (this step may not be necessary).

Please let me know if this works!? Thanks -

Note You save in USER DRUM SET! After reboot You may get PRESET DRUM SET (again). You have always to choose USER DRUM SET for saving DRUM SET in USER PATTERN (IMHO). I tried it out but only on one DRUM SET and one USER PRESET. I had to save USER PRESET too after that. Then rebooted SR18 and checked - all were memorized. Bass volume was 00.

Hi, yes! My machine defaults to USER DRUM SET, so I didn't consider it as a step in the process. I think you are correct, and thank you!

Sorry, don't know what to say. Me and my keyboard player have had and kept that ridiculous bass part off for years. Are you sure you are saving it at the end? Press and hold SAVE/COPY, then press REC/ENTER to get the SET SAVED message. That's all I can think of.

Thanks. I'll try again. It would seem to be such an obviously desirable setting change. It is just dumbfounding that it isn't one of the system level options.

Hello,

I got rid of my SR-16 and purchased an SR-18 thinking it would be an upgrade (in many ways it is), but why on earth did they add bass lines to a drum track? I'm a bass player and use the drum machine for practice and for jams, so why on earth would I want it to play bass with my drum tracks????

I tried all the methods posted here and none of them worked. I can only temporarily mute the bass, but I have to do it every time I turn it on.

Has anyone come up with a solution that works?

The inability to turn off the bass makes the sr18 unusable. And I love the SR16 so much.

I'm a total rookie and never owned the SR-16, but I agree that having to specifically mute the bass line is really annoying and problematic. There should be a way to do that globally.

Having said that, if you have a preset pattern you like you can save it to the User side, and then edit the Drumset Bass to volume 00.

Once you've saved your pattern to a User spot, push the Drumset button, the Bass button, the Preset/User button to User and then the Page Up/Down to Volume and set it to 0. Save the User Drumset and the User Pattern.

Not an easy work-around, but when you power off and back on the unit the Bass for that saved User Pattern is gone. It might mean you stick to User patterns. Something else to remember!

What would be great is if Alesis just give us a firmware update. I would love to use the 18 if it worked.

It works fine, I like it a lot more than the SR-16. I just wish it was easier to get rid of the bass. I managed to erase the bass layer from all the built in user patterns, but it took some time. Now, I don't have to deal with it anymore.

I can appreciate how much time that took..
I would now backup the SR18 and those User Patterns.
That will come in handy should you ever need to do a Factory restore etc...or just want a fresh set of User Patterns without the Bass.

Hi, this has worked for me for years now. I realize that for some folks, the bass seems to reset itself, but not for me. Basically you are turning down the global bass volume. Also works for percussion and drums. Here:

-> Turn on SR18
-> Press BASS
-> Press DRUM SET
-> Press Page Up or Page Down to get VOLUME
-> Press DEC (or rotate dial counter-clockwise) until volume is zero (00)
-> Press + hold SAVE/COPY to display SAVE SET
-> Press REC (ENTER) to display SET SAVED
-> Reboot SR18

Please let me know if this works for you!

That works fine, but you have to repeat the process every time you turn on the SR-18. This is not a permanent fix.

It is permanent for me (and our keyboard player), what can I say? Are you sure you are saving it properly?

Yes, you have to save the User Drumset (with bass volume 0) and then save the he User Preset with that drumset. I tried to make that clear in my original post, but thanks for clarifying for everyone.
