Is there a way to switch instruments from the keyboard?

I was wondering if there's a way I could switch from one instrument to another from the keyboard so I can swap instruments while playing without having to stop and manually select a different instrument in my DAW. If so, how do I do it?

Hello, Shayne

Thanks for posting!

Yes, there is. You can use the VI49 editor to change the Mode of the pads on your VI49 to send program changes. Refer to your software's reference manual to see which program change messages need to be sent to change to a specific preset.

Then send this preset to the controller.

Hope this helps!

How do I set the individual instruments to change when I hit one of the pads? Also, can I do the same thing with the buttons so I still have the pads available for drumming and launching tracks? If it matters which DAW I use, I use Ableton Live.

Hello, Shayne

That depends on your software. Typically Program Change 1 will be for the first preset in your VST, and so on and so on. Yes, you can do this with any button or switch that can be set to a program change in the editor. It does not matter which DAW you are using as long as you send this preset to the keyboard and make that the keyboard has the preset selected.

Hope this helps!

So basically, I just set the program number of an instrument to the program number of a particular button or pad, and pressing a button or pad will switch to whichever instrument has the same program number?

Hello, Shayne

Yes, that is correct. Just make sure your instrument track is set to receive MIDI information and on All Ins or Omni Channel.

I still can't get it to work. I changed the preset settings to the ones you showed me and set the program number of the instruments to the program number of the buttons, but I can't get them to switch. Can you give me a tutorial of what to do? I'm using Ableton's built-in instruments instead of a VST.

Hello, Shayne

As long as you have the keyboard setup to send a Program Change message, that will be all you have to do with the keyboard. Typically, program changes are sent to VSTs to change their presets. You may have to reach out to Ableton's support to see if that is a feature they have with their stock instruments.

Hope this helps!
