The Quick Start Guide is Useless!
This does Nothing to explain HOW to use the rotaries, buttons and pads.
Why is there not a comprehensive instruction manual for those of us just getting started using equipment like this?

It's a midi controller...the functions for the buttons, knobs, pads etc depends on the software or DAW (Digital Audio Workstation ) you are using and how they are assigned within that software.
I believe Ableton Live lite came with the VI49.
If it's version 9.2 and later everything should be pre-assigned.
If its 9.1 or lower there are additional steps for setup

If you are not using Ableton then check the software/DAW you are using and see if it has a built in template that supports it or you will have to manually assign all the buttons, knobs, pads etc within the software.
Usually you can tell if the software you're using supports it when you add the keyboard in the midi device setup..or "add a controller" option and see if it's listed
Some software/DAW's such as Studio One (Presonus) will have a midi learn feature to assist in the assigning.

Also ...check the editor that supports the VI49

The knowledge base may be of additional help

@ddayphoto, If you download the Editor for the VI49 from the product page, you will also be able to access it's user guide, which will walk you through how to use all of the functions of the Editor software.

Let me know if you have any additional questions.

What editor do you mean? VIP? I have a 'my products' page with some software codes.

Edit: okay never mind I finally found it at: alesis.com/vi49 > Downloads (not in the top nav bar but in a secondary nav below the product image of the vi149)

Yea seriously. Even the link on their website to the user guide is broken >.< I see why the review I read said the only real strike against it was the docs. I probably missed the video tutorials because I had trouble even installing the minimal bundled software that came with it (and I guess I'm old school but I hate video tutorials for this sort of thing)
