Footpedal with MPC Live

Hey all, question about MPC Live. I have 7-8 songs, each with 2-3 parts. I want to play them live on stage in Next Sequence mode, and per song, be able to trigger and jump around between with a footswitch instead using the pads. Any thoughts? Can a MIDI controller be hooked up to MPC to toggle in this way?

If you go into the general section of the settings menu you can enable program change for sequences and use an external midi controller to change sequences as you see fit, I use an mpk mini MK2 without problems..

Only if it's a midi pedal as the live doesn't have the inputs here's a link for a YouTube video showing a midi pedal that works..

To be quite honest I don't know for sure, but if it's programmable and can send program change then it's worth investigating to see if it fits the bill, if it doesn't you could always return it..

Time to hit the net and youtube then my friend, there are literally hundreds of tutorials online to help you out with th MPC live and X.. search for tubedigga on YouTube he has some of the easiest to understand and comprehensive tutorials, also I would highly recommend spending a few bucks on the MPC Bible ebook, it's a super resource will help you learn the live inside out..

Hey hellocward,

Thanks for posting!

The MPC Live hardware itself does not have an input for a 1/4" footswitch. A MIDI connection is your best bet when implementing external device control. That said, Next Sequence Mode is not MIDI mappable. If you map the pads to an external controller, they will not trigger a sequence to play, but the current program selected.

For more information about which MIDI controls are mappable, refer to the Knowledge Base guide below which dives into the Live's MIDI Learn feature in MIDI Control Mode.

Using MIDI Learn on the MPC X or MPC Live hardware in Standalone Mode

Hope this helps! Let me know if you have any questions!

Hi Nick

Could you just expand a little on your last reply. I was hoping to use a Nektar Pacer midi foot pedal mapped to the pads on the MPC Live. This way when using Next Sequence mode I could trigger which part of the song is coming up next using my foot pedal rather than have to stop playing the guitar and press a pad.

Were you saying this wouldn't be possible? Gutted if so!

You can have program change messages select the next sequence, e g program change 5 selects sequence 5 as next. When this is enabled you can use a pedal bank that sends program changes to select the next sequence. I use the rfx midi buddy pedal which has 12 pedals; an "up/down" pair which selects the 10s and 10 pedals to select the units (0-9).

For example, to send program change 42 (selecting sequence 42) I select bank 4 (maybe press up 4 times) then press the 2 pedal. If you have multiple songs in one project you can place the sequences such that the bank up goes between songs and the numbers select sections. For example, song 1 with 2 sections uses is sequence 1 and 2; song 3 has 3 sections so you put them on sequences 11, 12 and 13 etc. This accommodates 12 songs with up to 10 sections each (or 13, but the last one only has 7 sections).

Hi Daniel.

Thanks a lot for the information..can you do me a favour?

Can you load up a screenshot for your mpc live preferences so i can see how you have made your default setting between the mpc and your foot controller..
